If you have never used an eSIM before then your Thailand trip is the perfect time to start because it is genuinely one of the best travel upgrades you can make and will save you both money and stress from the moment your plane touches down.

Before you purchase an eSIM it is worth checking that your phone supports eSIM technology. 

The good news is that most modern smartphones released in the last few years are eSIM compatible including iPhone XS and later models, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most other flagship Android devices released after 2020. 

You can check whether your specific device is compatible by going into your phone settings and looking for a Digital SIM or eSIM option, or by checking the manufacturer's website. If your phone is not eSIM compatible then a physical local SIM card purchased at the airport or a 7/11 store in Thailand is your next best option and costs very little.

While you are sorting your eSIM there is one more thing I strongly recommend setting up before you travel and that is a VPN.

Even with your own eSIM data there will be times when you connect to hotel WiFi, cafe WiFi or co working space networks in Thailand and every time you do that without a VPN you are potentially exposing your personal data, banking apps and social media accounts to security risks.

Set it up before you travel and switch it on every time you connect to public WiFi.

Make sure that data roaming is turned on in your phone settings once you arrive in Thailand otherwise your eSIM will not connect to the local network. 

If you are using an iPhone make sure your device is unlocked before purchasing an eSIM as locked devices may not be compatible with foreign network providers. Always purchase more data than you think you will need as Google Maps, social media and content creation use data faster than most people expect, especially when you are navigating unfamiliar places every day.
